AHPA MEETING MINUTES
October 8th, 2006

By Makena

The meeting started with a group consensus to donate $35 dollars to the Honolulu Zoological Society.  Linda Santos did such a wonderful job showing our group the avian areas in the Honolulu Zoo.

The meeting was turned over to Dr. Eric Ako DVM.  After a short brief on his background, Dr. Ako handed out a CDC question and answer sheet on the Avian Flu.   He explained that the Avian Flu and the West Nile Virus is not currently in Hawaii, however, the diseases will find their way here someday.  He opened the meeting up to questions from the group.  Subjects covered were mites, female behavior when laying eggs, Chlamydia/Psittacosis, foods to feed your parrot, different pellets, and perches (guava to cement). Dr. Ako stayed after the formal question and answer session to answer individual questions.

Dr. Eric Ako presented an insightful, positive, interesting and factual window into world of veterinary medicine.  He dispelled many myths and misinformation and provided the most interesting stories as to the how and why behind many facts.

Respectfully submitted,

Makena
