AHPA MEETING MINUTES
September 10th, 2006

By Makena

Linda Santos gave our group an extremely interesting tour of the avian exhibits.  The Honolulu Zoo works with other zoos around the world on conservation of many birds.  She gave us up close and personal stories concerning each grouping of birds in the zoo.

When we got to the parrot section, the staff had placed rolled up brown paper bags on a chop stick full of the goodies for the parrots to forage.  Then we proceeded to the back where the zookeepers prepared the food for all the birds.  Linda explained procedures and sanitation that facilitated feeding 200+ birds a day.  She also discussed the foods and vitamins given to certain birds and why.  Fun was had by all. For more information about the Honolulu Zoo go to www.honoluluzoo.org.

Just a reminder, our next meeting is on Sunday, October 8, 2006, Noon, Pot Luck, Neil Blaisdell Park.  This meeting will be one you should not miss.  The topics will be hard hitting and could save your bird’s life. Topics will include advances in Avian Medicine and Avian Diseases common to Hawaii.
